Some nights, when I’m not ready to go to sleep, my guilty pleasure is browsing Etsy. Etsy is a website for artisans to buy supplies and sell finished products that they have created. I like to get ideas from other artists around the world and see what others are creating. I discovered people from all over the globe that collect sea glass and pebbles! I now have a collection for my jewelry from Israel, Nova Scotia, and Valencia Spain (pictured left) and from my own back yard: the San Francisco Bay.

I have tried to replicate the hunt on foreign shores in my own back yard: by the water’s edge of the San Francisco Bay. I have found very little that I want to make into jewelry so instead I hunt late at night from the magical finds of others.

Sharon Sand has the most fantastic sea glass in all shapes, colors and sizes for sale. Her website is beautiful and NOT to be missed!

I love the fact that I am recycling (glass, pottery, stones!) They are vintage (what’s older than a rock?!), from around the world that’s magical.

I originally created Jewelry by Tabernash for women to have an option different that the mass produced earrings that were being offered at department. I love that my items are “one of a kind” creations, small pieces of artwork that will make you feel unique, beautiful and can be worn day or night…supermarket or out to dinner!

What do you make? I want to know…

When I make jewelry it gives me time to think:

This morning I put my son on a plane to finish his Freshman semester. Having him here was 3 weeks of shopping, cooking, cleaning, and debating. I feel that we are very much alike. Sometimes he doesn’t like that. Sometimes I don’t like that. But it’s true. We are cut from the same cloth.

For some people it’s not until our children leave that we have the opportunity to assess who and what they have become. They are a reflection of ourselves and I need to clean the mirror and look deeper into it.

Being eighteen must be difficult. You are suppose to be working towards a “career goal” and figuring out what you want to be in life. The balancing of schoolwork, fun, and friends is a lot to figure out!

Then, there is the return to “that woman” who asks you to empty the dishwasher, take out the trash, pick up your laundry. How can you like the person who always has advice to give, questions your efforts, and holds you accountable for tuition being spent? There are lots of reasons to love college.

I want to be liked and loved. I hope my son will come back to me after 4 years and understand my decisions. Whatever the outcome is, I already miss you.

Miss you by Jewelry By Tabernash

Do you have challenges with your teenagers? How do you handle it?

Time to make earrings…and think some more.

I also often find myself late at night browsing on Craigslist and Pinterest, searching for “the deal of the century” and “creative outlets.” Jewelry By Tabernash is bringing both to the forefront! I have branched out beyond jewelry, listing my private button collection this past December. Jewelers and artistic magicians can create fantastic items with the right color, shape and material. I love Bakelite, Czech glass and vintage buttons. Buttons are like vintage beads and I find myself drawn to these tiny treasures that I can hold in my palm and admire. Red Buttons to liven up that drab sweater you got for xmas?! So be extra nice to yourself this winter. It’s okay to buy yourself a gift that will make you smile until the sun shines again! How do you do to deal with the long cold month of January? I’d love to hear your ideas. Bundle Up!
Yes, it’s true, “I was too cool for the prom”. Oh, I know what you are thinking…poor Sue, it’s probably an excuse for “she didn’t have a date”. No, not true. College men weren’t often seen at High School Proms in 1977.

My deal was, I didn’t “get” the whole prom thing. The dresses were unflattering, polka dotted, plaid or frilly gowns that were on par with ugly bridesmaid dresses! (don’t get me started on bridesmaid dresses)Earrings were usually reminiscent of a Vegas show. I just didn’t do UGLY.

I never enjoyed the sloppy drinking crowd and couldn’t relate to girls that were having their hair and nails fussed over for this one evening of distorted Barbie fun! What’s the point getting dressed up and teetering on your platforms for some guy, just to endure memory lane photos that will sit on his parents mantel until their death?! I thought, “who cares”? Dancing all night? Out with friends, laughing and partying? You have to go to the prom for that?! It was 1977 and I was above this behavior. I guess I was a Prom Snob. (Though if they had duct tape dresses in my day I would have seriously considered this option)!

Then, I had kids… My two gentlemen are going to the prom next week. Their dates are super nice, pretty, fun and smart! I’m so excited to see their dresses, hair, shoes, EARRINGS etc. I love the fact that the girls (and my boys) are buying stylishly cool eveningwear for a memorable night out! Of course, they will smile for me while I click away (sorry no blog pictures) for my memory books.

I guess what was once uncool for me, may be ultra cool for my kids and I appreciate the opportunity to share it with them. At least from 5-6pm!

Still need Prom earrings? Don’t panic…

www.tabernash.etsy.com

Did you go to the prom? Please tell me about it!

It Started in Nova Scotia…

Late night shopping can be exciting and adventurous. When my significant other and the two dachshunds start snoring, I reach for my laptop and cruise Ebay and Etsy. I’m looking for exotic beads from around the world for Jewelry by Tabernash, my online store.

Recently I stumbled upon a dealer in Nova Scotia who is selling colorful beach glass and eroded pottery shards. “I WANT THOSE!” I shouted to dreaming bed partners. The tumbling of these pieces in the ocean erodes their edges smooth and polishes their ceramic tops. The exposed earthenware frames the faded ceramic piece like a picture. Glass becomes a smoky color from the salt and sand. One web site said, “This process takes a minimum of twenty years or so. It is not “cooked” if the piece is still glossy or the edges are rough.”

Upon further investigation I found people selling recycled glass and ceramic pieces in the UK, Greece, Israel and even Northern California. My brain was on fire!

After posting to Facebook “Where is your favorite place locally to get beach glass”? I got numerous insights on where to go. It seems that Tiburon, San Francisco, Ft. Bragg and even Mill Valley have these miniature pieces of history waiting for me at low tide to come and collect them. (My friends almost all suggested the locations should not be shared publicly.)

With further digging, (no pun intended) I found that there are glass societies, glass museums and websites of vendors selling beach waste. The glass is graded into size, color and clarity classes.

The interesting thing that the places you find these materials all have in common is garbage. It seems that we used to dump our waste into the sea, and these materials are a by-product of this horrendous practice. I’m afraid this still goes on in some parts of the world.

These earrings are the ultimate in Recycling, Vintage collecting and storytelling rolled into one piece. Could this China be the discarded tea cup of Royalty? Are these bottles that floated over the high seas from far-away islands? I like to think so.

I know it has been a long time since I’ve “blogged”. I’ve missed you. It’s been awhile since I’ve had something to say. But a great idea has recently come to me (in the middle of the night) regarding my earring business, Jewelry By Tabernash. Each month, I’m going to try to have a small collection that means something to me and perhaps means something to you! I have so many designs running through my head (this could be the reason why I make “one of a kind designs”) that a monthly theme will narrow it down. So here goes…

March is my”Diminutive Collection“. I had a customer recently who was vertically challenged. She said, “I love to wear small earrings, I want to wear the earring, not have the earring wear me”. I thought my head was going to explode when I heard this. It made so much sense to me. Not only do women NOT want to wear the same earring that everyone else is wearing from Nordstroms but they want an earring that compliments their outfit not overbears it. Supermarket, Yoga, working around the house or carpooling I want an understated earring (about an inch long) that is pretty. There are times I want to be glamorous, turning heads and grabbing the attention of my date. But, in general my lifestyle is such that I just want to feel put together by wearing a simply beautiful accessory. With a small earring I often enjoy the intimacy of someone leaning in to admire it too. It’s a nice shared moment.

When I made this line I realized that there are many situations that desire a “diminutive” earring. A new earring wearer, a hair style swept up or pulled back from the ears, a fresh youthful look, a classic beauty with a short hair style all can enjoy a small beautiful earring.

Miniature pearls, mini vintage crystals, and teensy recycled glass, are some of the materials I use for my unique designs.

Jewelry that makes you feel beautiful – Jewelry by Tabernash

Stop by next month to see my “Recycled Love” line!

Come tweet with me @bytabernash and by all means please “like” me on Facebook! I’d love it!

Birthday/Thanksgiving/Channukah/Christmas/Anniversary/New Years…these are a few of my favorite things that make the last 5 weeks of my year…FULL. It’s a lot of celebrating. I start early with “what the hell should I get?….” anxiety. The perfect gift/present weighs heavily on me. It doesn’t need to be expensive, just heart felt. (extra hard) Those special things that my kids made me when they were in Kindergarten are still in my bedside drawer and make me smile when I come across them. A holiday, birthday and definitely an anniversary are markings of time and should be recognized. So I start early in June.

As much as I try to stay positive my family has mentioned that I get a little cranky during the month of December. It’s the “silly season”…running, preparing, spending, gaining weight! Don’t get me wrong, I love to celebrate but I think celebrations should be spread out over the year. Maybe a Channukah party in May would be perfect or a class celebration in January more relaxing? Then there are teachers, tutors, friends, the mailman, garbage man and cleaning women to recognize (love my cleaning women!) to name a few. I don’t want to miss anyone! Along with kids, husband, family gifts, wrapped and shipping to deal with along with the food schleping, preparing, eating, leftover thing! ahhhh. It’s enough to make anyone a little overwhelmed.

So, as I get older AND wiser I try to approach these 5 weeks differently than I did when I was newly married. Below are a couple of helpful hints to get through the holiday madness. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD!

1. Your time is important…Internet shopping is brilliant. My motto is…”if they don’t wrap it, include a card, and deliver it…I”m not buying it!” Do you want to stand in line at the post office, card shop and have to purchase wrapping paper? www.tabernash.etsy.com Jewelry by Tabernash does it all and will write a holiday message for you!

2. Charity. Your Uncle Buck is 92 years old? You have coworkers or teachers that definitely don’t need another smelly candle? Buy a water buffalo (or part of one) in their name and send them a card from www.heifer.org . At heifer you can purchase chickens, alpacas, cows, goats, or a water buffalo for anyone on your list. If you don’t need earrings…(that’s a tough one) help out this incredible organization.

3. Make something. Presents don’t always need to cost a lot of money! (though earrings are not very expensive) Pie?, Cookies?, Jams?, Spice rub is a favorite around here. Cook something special for your neighbor, friend, postman, garbage man? Food is where the heart is..well it is for me at least.

4. Community Service is a great present. How about donating your time with a family member for a community project? Toys for Tots? Local food drive? Serving the homeless on Christmas eve? Bring a family member with you and show them what the true meaning of Christmas is all about this year.

5. Wine. Bring a bottle of wine. Buy an inexpensive but excellent bottle of Courtney Benham and you are done! Get an extra bottle for the cookie making session, it helps!

6. Your mother in law is tricky to buy for every year? Try these beautiful personalized linens from Betsy Grace. She makes these adorable linens that help remind us to be polite! (especially around the holidays)

7. Creative. Check out my really creative sister’s 2nd book on Glass Bead making. You can pre order it from Amazon and leave a glass bead under the tree with the promise of this book arriving in a couple of weeks! By pre-ordering from Amazon you save 34%! Jeri also teaches beginners the art of Glass Bead in her class. Come join us in Vegas (yes the bead making capital of the world) this March for a class! You can contact Jeri Warhaftig and ask her about her upcoming classes.

8. Magazine subscriptions. (Take the time to find out your friend or families interests and order something that they will get for 12 months!)

9. The Whirly Popper rocks!…I love this gift! Who doesn’t love popcorn…

10. Send cash. Isn’t it cool when you get a gift/present that is cash for you to do just what you want? (yes, it’s heart felt when you send a great card with love.)

So there are my 10 things to make your gift giving/present giving easier this year. So you ask…what’s the difference between Gift giving and Present Giving? (this is a good Holiday trivia question to ask Aunt Sally). To give a “present” you have to be there (present). To give a Gift…you do not!

A fabulous man traveled many miles to a wintry ski town to court an unappreciative young woman. It was Christmas Eve, and Dave (my husband to be) took me out to a wonderful dinner at a local German restaurant. Back in the 80′s there weren’t many fancy restaurants in the tiny town of Winter Park, Colorado, but he had researched all of them and decided this was the most romantic. Let’s state I was cocky, self-assured and freaked out by the attention he doted on me that evening. Newly divorced from my first marriage and living with seven twenty-one year old boys, I was skiing all day and not committing too much at night. Dave was handsome, charming, smart, nice, and fun! He was definitely a something special. It scared the heck out of me. He lived in California for God’s sake!

After dinner he took me to his friend’s empty condo in town. I remember it had a small couch, and that was it. So you had to sit on the only piece of furniture close, which was a queue to my husband-to-be to kiss me. I remember having butterflies in the stomach, with that romantic, mess-up-your-hair kind of kiss.

It was amazing, but I knew that I had to get out of there. I knew all the tricks. First you kiss, and then you end up in California with two kids. No way THAT was going to happen to me, that evening. It was snowing and I had to get to bed to be well rested for skiing on Christmas Day.

So, Dave politely took me home. We said our good-byes at the door and he left. He drove over the pass, a 14,000 ft. snowy peak in the middle of the night back down to Denver. (What a jerk I was for not inviting him in for Christmas Eve.)

The next morning I realized my favorite earring was lost. It had porcupine quills, with long dangling beads that Cher might wear in a Vegas show, very 1980’s. (As of this publication, I can’t seem to find them to show you!) I sadly chalked up the loss and put the single earring on my dresser front and center. I knew that lost earring was at the “love shack” and I wasn’t going to call Dave and inquire. Six weeks went by and every day I saw that earring on the dresser. Whenever I saw that earring on the dresser, it made me think about Dave. I couldn’t get him out of my head. That earring was a constant reminder that I was mean that night and really didn’t like myself very much. Every time I looked at it I thought how I might have pushed a special guy out of my life.

Around Valentines Day I couldn’t stand it any longer. I at least owed him an apology…so I called. (If you know me, I’m not great at apologizing) He was gracious, happy and very accepting of my call. He said that he had found something of mine in the condo’s shag carpet and that he would send it to me in the mail. The next week…. my favorite earring made its way home and Dave a place in my heart.

Here on my blog, or on my Face Book page- JewelrybyTabernash I’m having a free earring give away for the best earring story. Please come and tell me about your favorite pair of earrings. Found in a yard sale? Given to you by your mother in law? Lover? Child? Self? Did you give someone a gift and it was memorable? I want to hear all about it. Don’t have a story yet? You can always find a special pair earrings on www.tabernash.etsy.com

The best story will be chosen 12/18/10 (midnight…right?) and a pair of earrings will be sent to the address that you provide. Good luck!
